Serotonin syndrome has been reported with amphetamine use, including ADDERALL XR. Cardiovascular effects include arrhythmias, hypertension or hypotension and circulatory collapse. DRUGS AND MEDICATIONS CENTER

This medication may interfere with certain medical/lab tests (such as blood and urine steroid levels, brain scan for Parkinson’s disease), possibly causing false test results. Make sure lab personnel and all your doctors know you use this drug. During pregnancy, this medication should be used only when clearly needed. Infants born to mothers who are dependent on this medication may be born too soon (premature) and have low birth weight. Tell your doctor right away if you notice possible mood changes, agitation, or unusual tiredness in your newborn. Loss of appetite, weight loss, dry mouth, stomach upset/pain, nausea/vomiting, dizziness, headache, diarrhea, fever, nervousness, and trouble sleeping may occur.

Talk to your doctor if you are using marijuana (cannabis). If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. When this medication is used for a long time, it may not work as well. Talk with your doctor if this medication stops working well.

Adderall and other stimulants are sometimes prescribed off-label for treating symptoms of depression in people with bipolar disorder. When used for this purpose, stimulants aren’t usually used by themselves, but are combined with other bipolar disorder medications. Advise patients that ADDERALL XR is a federally controlled substance because it can be abused or lead to dependence. Additionally, emphasize that ADDERALL XR should be stored in a safe place to prevent misuse and/or abuse.

In some cases, the brand-name drug and the generic version may be available in different forms and strengths. Both Adderall and Ritalin are effective for improving symptoms of ADHD. Adderall and Ritalin (methylphenidate) are both commonly used to treat ADHD. However, there are some differences that might make you prefer one over the other. Both Adderall and Vyvanse are effective for improving symptoms of ADHD. In fact, they’re both considered to be among the first choices of medications for treating ADHD.

Tell your doctor about any mental problems you or your child have, or about a family history of suicide, bipolar illness, or depression. Call your doctor right away if you or your child has any signs of heart problems such as chest pain, shortness of breath, or fainting while taking ADDERALL XR. The following have been reported with use of stimulant medicines. Read the Medication Guide that comes with ADDERALL XR before you or your child starts taking it and each time you get a refill.

Urticaria, rash, hypersensitivity reactions including angioedema and anaphylaxis. Serious skin rashes, including Stevens-Johnson Syndrome and toxic epidermal necrolysis have been reported. Afternoon doses should be avoided because of the potential for insomnia.

  1. Where possible, ADDERALL XR therapy should be interrupted occasionally to determine if there is a recurrence of behavioral symptoms sufficient to require continued therapy.
  2. In some cases, this can require increasing the dosage of a drug to get the same effect.
  3. Stop Adderall immediately if you experience these symptoms.

In many cases, the body develops a tolerance to these side effects, and they go away. However, when Adderall is used in recommended therapeutic dosages, tolerance to its treatment effects usually doesn’t occur. Once an effective dosage is determined, that dosage can often be continued for long periods of time without any loss of effectiveness. Some negative effects have been seen in infants born to people who have taken drugs similar to Adderall during pregnancy. These include an increased risk of being born premature, having low birth weight, or having symptoms of drug withdrawal. The risk of serotonin syndrome/toxicity increases if you are also taking other drugs that increase serotonin.

Vyvanse is available as a delayed-release capsule and a chewable tablet, both of which are taken once daily. The chewable tablet may be a good option for those who have a hard time swallowing pills. Typically, your doctor will start you on a low dosage and adjust it over time to reach the dosage that’s right for you. They’ll ultimately prescribe the smallest dosage that provides the desired effect. Call your doctor right away if you have serious side effects.

However, animal studies don’t always predict the way humans would respond. Increased amounts of these messengers in the brain can result in more focus and attention. In people with ADHD, it can also result in a calming effect. In people with narcolepsy, it helps with alertness and wakefulness. Also, tests may be done to check for heart problems, breathing problems, and oxygen levels. And medications may be needed for heart problems or seizures if they occur.

(Drug misuse is also called abuse.) However, Vyvanse may be less likely to be misused. This is because Adderall has a more immediate and intense effect when taken, which might be attractive to people who want to misuse it. This seems to occur in about 2 percent to 4 percent of people taking Adderall XR. Some people who take Adderall may experience feelings of being energetic, focused, excited, or self-confident.

To help prevent withdrawal, your doctor may lower your dose slowly. Withdrawal is more likely if you have used this medication for a long time or in high doses. Tell your doctor or pharmacist right away if you have withdrawal. Acute administration of high doses of amphetamine (d-or d,l-) has been shown to produce long-lasting neurotoxic effects, including irreversible nerve fiber damage, in rodents. Manifestations of amphetamine overdose include restlessness, tremor, hyperreflexia, rapid respiration, confusion, assaultiveness, hallucinations, panic states, hyperpyrexia and rhabdomyolysis. Fatigue and depression usually follow the central nervous system stimulation.

Examples include street drugs such as MDMA/ “ecstasy,” St. John’s wort, certain antidepressants (including SSRIs such as fluoxetine/paroxetine, SNRIs such as duloxetine/venlafaxine), among others. The risk of serotonin syndrome/toxicity may be more likely when you start or increase the dose of these drugs. Though it helps many people, this medication may sometimes cause addiction. This risk may be higher if you have a substance use disorder (such as overuse of or addiction to drugs/alcohol). Do not increase your dose, take it more often, or use it for a longer time than prescribed. Juvenile rats treated with mixed amphetamine salts early in the postnatal period through sexual maturation demonstrated transient changes in motor activity.

There are no reports of adverse effects on the breastfed infant. Long-term neurodevelopmental effects on infants from amphetamine exposure are unknown. It is possible that large dosages of amphetamine might interfere with milk production, especially in women whose lactation is not well established. Because of the potential for serious adverse reactions in nursing infants, advise patients that breastfeeding is not recommended during treatment with ADDERALL XR. Discontinue treatment with ADDERALL XR and any concomitant serotonergic agents immediately if symptoms of serotonin syndrome occur, and initiate supportive symptomatic treatment. Concomitant use of ADDERALL XR with other serotonergic drugs or CYP2D6 inhibitors should be used only if the potential benefit justifies the potential risk.

If the first drug you try doesn’t work well or causes too many side effects, a different medication might work better. Your doctor will guide you through the process of finding the right medication for you. The brand and generic versions of Strattera usually cost more than the brand and generic versions of Adderall.
