It is so important to look after your health and wellness as if these deteriorate then your life is going to be substantially impacted. Yet many of us neglect our well-being because we are so focused on our jobs and families that we forget to put ourselves first. Most peoples lives tend to run at speed barely giving them time to come up for air. When you are juggling work, your home, friends, family, kids and hobbies your ability to step back and assess how you are doing is hampered. You’ve probably heard the phrase “check in with yourself” many times before. Checking in with yourself means carving out time each day to ask yourself how you’re doing. In this space, you can sort out your emotions, assess your physical and emotional needs, and make an intentional plan on how to address these needs moving forward. This self-guided exercise won’t give you a “wellness score” or ranking, and it shouldn’t be used as a diagnostic tool or a substitute for professional help.

Hopefully it’s clear that you don’t have to ask all of the questions on our list. Think of them more as conversation starters, questions to ask if the conversation stalls, or if your client is struggling to open up. And remember to keep your questions open-ended so that you can draw out more information during your sessions.

We asked a few of our Alo Moves instructors what they ask themselves when they need to check in with their emotional health. Incorporate the questions that resonate with you in your next check-in session. Then we came up with a series of questions adapted from these conversations, as well as from prompts in four common psychological assessments. That means that you can have the odd indulgence but not allow yourself to go crazy. You can work of course but not regularly stay late and ignore the rest of your life because it consumes you. Find that wonderful middle ground and you are setting yourself up for success.
