Other uses for this medicine
Emtricitabine/tenofovir is not a cure for HIV infection. To decrease your risk of spreading HIV disease to others, continue to take all HIV medications exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Use an effective barrier method (latex or polyurethane condoms/dental dams) during sexual activity as directed by your doctor.
If you are also taking didanosine enteric-coated tablets, take both products either on an empty stomach or with a light meal. If you are taking the didanosine buffered tablets, take both drug products on an empty stomach. You should bring this list with you each time you visit a doctor or if you are admitted to a hospital. It is also important information to carry with you in case of emergencies.
Remember that this medication has been prescribed because your doctor has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects. It is very important to keep taking this medication (and other HIV medications) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. Read the Medication Guide provided by your pharmacist before you start taking this medication and each time you get a refill.
HIV treatment
When your supply of emtricitabine starts to run low, get more from your doctor or pharmacist. If you miss doses or stop taking emtricitabine, your condition may become more difficult to treat. Before taking emtricitabine/tenofovir, tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are allergic to either of the medications; or if you have any other allergies. This product may contain inactive ingredients, which can cause allergic reactions or other problems. Do not take more or less of this drug than prescribed or stop taking it (or other HIV medicines) even for a short time unless directed to do so by your doctor. Doing so may cause the amount of virus to increase, make the infection more difficult to treat (resistant), or worsen side effects.
The drug has hallucinogenic effects, which means that it changes thinking, perception of time and emotions, and distorts vision and hearing and causes hallucinations. Similar to Rohypnol and GHB, it has also been used to ‘spike’ drinks prior to sexual assault. Powdered ketamine is cut into lines known as ‘bumps’ and snorted, or smoked in marijuana or tobacco cigarettes. Liquid ketamine is injected intramuscularly or mixed into drinks.
This product should not be used by itself to help control HIV infection. Doing so can make your treatment less effective. Combination treatment with at least one other HIV medication should be used. Ask your doctor or pharmacist for a copy of the manufacturer’s information for the patient. Keep all appointments with your doctor and the laboratory. Your doctor may order certain tests to check your body’s response to emtricitabine.
What side effects may I notice from receiving this medication?
Keep taking this therapy unless your care team tells you to stop. This product is also used to help prevent HIV infection in people who have a high risk for infection. Emtricitabine comes as a capsule and an oral solution (liquid) to take by mouth.
A special MedGuide will be given to you by the pharmacist with each prescription and refill. Be sure to read this information carefully each time. This medicine may be used for other purposes; ask your health care provider or pharmacist if you have questions. MDMA (3, 4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine), better known as ecstasy, is a synthetic, psychoactive drug that acts like both a stimulant and a hallucinagen.
Talk to your doctor about the risks of taking emtricitabine. If you have hepatitis B, talk to your care team if you plan to stop this medication. The symptoms of hepatitis B may get worse if you stop this medication. You will need to have important blood work done while on this medication. GHB is usually ingested orally, either in a liquid or powder form. GHB dissolved in liquid such as water, juice, or alcohol has been packaged in small vials or small water bottles.
Emtricitabine should not be used to treat hepatitis B virus infection (HBV; an ongoing liver infection). Tell your doctor if you have or think you may have HBV. Your doctor may test you to see if you have HBV before you begin your treatment with emtricitabine.
MDMA (Ecstasy) Abuse Research Report
If you are taking this product to prevent HIV infection, you must first get tested to be sure you are HIV-negative. Your doctor will perform lab tests before starting this medication and periodically during treatment (every 3 months) to make sure that you do not have HIV infection. Using this product will not always prevent HIV infection. To get the most benefit from it, take this product exactly as directed, and follow all prevention actions. Promoting and Protecting the City’s Health
Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all the products you use (including prescription drugs, nonprescription drugs, and herbal products). Rarely, this medication can cause severe (sometimes fatal) liver and blood problems (lactic acidosis). Diarrhea, headache, dizziness, trouble sleeping, back pain, or change in the color of skin on your palms or soles of your feet may occur. If any of these effects last or get worse, tell your doctor or pharmacist promptly. When used to treat HIV infection, this product is taken with other medicines that treat HIV.
