Eye Miosis Constricted Pupils: Causes & Treatment

People using heroin are at risk of contracting blood infections by sharing needles. Injecting heroin can also damage the veins and arteries and may cause gangrene. How often you get your vision checked depends on your age and certain health factors.

Seven causes of pinpoint pupils

  1. Abnormally constricted pupils (miosis), also known as pinpoint pupils, may be a sign of a larger issue with your health.
  2. If you notice pinpoint pupils in one or both eyes, contact a healthcare provider.
  3. Argyll Robertson pupils are constricted pupils in someone who has late-stage syphilis.
  4. Pupils also make small adjustments in size to help you focus better on a close or distant object.
  5. The pupil is the part of your eye that controls how much light gets in.
  6. If the brainstem is affected, a stroke can affect vision in different ways.

Surgeons prefer pupils that are open to about 7 millimeters (mm) to do surgery. There are some issues related to small pupils, including something called intraoperative floppy iris syndrome (IFIS). Providers have developed devices, medications and strategies for dealing with intraoperative miosis. Opioids, including morphine, are drugs commonly prescription medication for pain relief. Opioids can affect a person psychologically and are highly addictive. A fully dilated pupil is typically in the 4 to 8 millimeters in size, while a constricted pupil is in the 2 to 4 mm range.

Horner’s syndrome

The doctor may be able to prescribe a different form of medication. Most people have pupils that are only a couple of millimeters wide and symmetrical (meaning both eyes have the same size pupil). A small subset, however, naturally have one pupil that’s bigger than the other. Because this type of headache affects nerves in the face, the pupil on the affected side can become abnormally small (called miosis) during the headaches. The observer typically will then alternately direct the light at each eye and again observe the pupil responses of both eyes.

Health Challenges

The drugs treat high blood pressure and benign prostatic hyperplasia (an enlarged prostate). It can also happen if you take other medications designed to constrict your pupils. A person needs to seek medical help immediately if they develop pinpoint pupils, as some causes can have severe complications. They can also signal an underlying medical condition, such as stroke, head injury, or eye condition.

When your pupils are much smaller than normal and don’t respond as they normally do to light or focus changes, you have miosis. You should contact your healthcare provider about most of them, as some causes can be serious. Your provider may prescribe medications, often eye drops, to treat eye conditions like uveitis or iritis.

Pinpoint Pupils

Pinpoint pupils can also indicate that something is wrong with your health. You may be on a drug that constricts your pupils too much; you may have a nerve or head injury; or there could be a problem inside your eye. The treatment of miosis depends on the reason that you have miosis.

In some cases, however, anisocoria can be a sign of a serious problem, such as a viral infection, an issue with the nervous system or an eye injury or condition. The pupil is the opening in the center of the colored part of the eye (iris). Pupils naturally get larger and smaller thousands of times a day, regulating the amount of light that enters the eye.

Prescription Drugs

Accidentally taking too much benzodiazepine may cause constricted pupils as well. Benzodiazepines, or “benzos,” are prescribed for anxiety, panic disorder, seizures, insomnia, and alcohol withdrawal. In older adults, pupils are smaller when at rest in the dark and slower to dilate in response to light. Damage to the eye or brain can cause miosis in one or both eyes, which is typically permanent.

The pupil is the opening in the center of the iris (the structure that gives our eyes their color). The function of the pupil is to allow light to enter the eye so it can be focused on the retina to begin the process of sight. Recovery from intracerebral hemorrhage differs from person to person. A lot depends on how quickly you received treatment and how well you can control your blood pressure. If your pupils are small because of inflammation in your eye, they can give you long-lasting dilating drops (atropine or homatropine) that make your pupils wider.

The following are commonly asked questions about pinpoint pupils. A doctor will prescribe a medication called naloxone to the person experiencing an overdose. Anisocoria is a condition in which one pupil is wider than other. While it can be a natural occurrence, affecting about 20 percent of people, it can also signal a nerve problem or infection. Typically, pupil testing is performed in a dimly lit room.

Bacterial and viral infections require treatment from an ophthalmological specialist. Exposure to toxins will be managed by several medical professionals, including an ophthalmologist. If you abuse drugs or alcohol, you may need medical treatment in an addiction rehabilitation program. The muscles in your iris pull your pupil closed or allow it to open for several normal, healthy reasons.
