Because Avastin is given as an infusion, infusion-related reactions may occur. Avastin infusions will be stopped by your doctor or nurse if infusion reactions are severe. Everyone reacts differently to Avastin treatment. Some side effects may lessen over days to weeks as you get used to the medicine, while others may last even after treatment is stopped. Not everyone has serious or life-threatening side effects.

These rare symptoms may occur within hours of your first dose of Avastin, or they may not appear for up to a year after your treatment started. This VEGF helps tumors to form new blood vessels and blocking VEGF stops the cancer from developing its own blood supply. Some examples of infusion-related reactions include flu-like symptoms, skin rash, allergy, angioedema and abdominal pain.

Serious side effects from Avastin can occur, but they aren’t common. If you have serious side effects from Avastin, call your doctor right away. But if you think you’re having a medical emergency, you should call 911 or your local emergency number. Talk to your care team if you are concerned about your fertility.
